How many of us older folks get our very own love story? How about one set in a pastoral background that echoes the cherished days of old, filled with warm, woolly animals and illustrations? Not many — Until now. That is if grandson Charlie can work his magic on his seemingly hopeless, love-struck Grandpa Gus.
It’s summer in rural Northern Minnesota, and eleven-year-old Charlie is spending a month on his grandpa’s hobby farm. He quickly notices that Grandpa Gus is smitten with Violet, his cheerful, vivacious, and friendly next-door neighbor. Surprisingly, the usually talkative Gus becomes shy and tongue-tied around her, often avoiding her. Sensing that Violet has feelings for his grandpa, Charlie decides to enlist the help of Gus’s rescued farm animals to bring the two widowers together before his visit — and summer — comes to an end.
Author and artist duo, Debbie and McKenzie, had been chatting about Deb’s needle felt hobby when the idea for a one-of-a-kind multimedia book blending fiber and digital art struck. So they decided to give it a go. After months of trial and error, sketching, writing, and needle felting, the result is this charming story for all ages.
A Peek at the Process
Writing
From first draft to final manuscript, Deb worked her magic as a writer and crafted the sweet story of Charlie, his grandpa and their adventure on the hobby farm one summer. This served as the springboard for the artwork.
Sketch
Each Illustration started with an idea and a linework sketch done digitally.
Felt
Once the linework was just right, Deb needle felted each page by hand.
Digital
The pages were photographed and the last layer of digital painting brought it all to life!
